GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A man who was shot by a police officer during an attempted arrest Wednesday night has died from his injuries, according to the Grand Rapids Police Department.
The incident occurred shortly after 9:30 p.m. on February 18, 2026, when officers began pursuing a man riding a bicycle in the area of Southeast Eastern Avenue and Southeast Logan Street. Authorities said officers believed the man was armed at the time of the pursuit.
Police reported that the bicyclist rode into an apartment complex parking lot during the chase. After cornering him, officers deployed a police dog to assist in the arrest. According to GRPD, when officers attempted to take the man into custody, he resisted arrest.
During the struggle, one officer discharged their weapon, striking the man. First responders rendered aid at the scene before transporting him to a local hospital. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries Thursday morning, police confirmed.
Investigators stated that a handgun was recovered at the scene of the shooting. No officers were reported injured during the encounter.
