In Loving Memory of George A. Kalkounos
On Tuesday, February 17, 2026, the Kalkounos family and the Chicago Prime Restaurants family lost a true legend with the passing of our founder and beloved patriarch, George A. Kalkounos. He passed away peacefully at the age of 75, in the loving arms of his devoted wife, Magda Kalkounos.
George was more than a restaurateur—he was a visionary, a mentor, and a man whose life’s work was rooted in hospitality, generosity, and an unwavering belief in people. Through his leadership and passion, he built not only successful restaurants, but a culture grounded in excellence, warmth, and respect. His presence shaped the identity of Chicago Prime Restaurants and left a lasting imprint on the culinary community.
Those who worked alongside George remember his hands-on leadership style and his commitment to developing others. He believed in giving people opportunities, nurturing talent, and building careers. Countless team members found guidance, encouragement, and inspiration under his mentorship. He took pride not only in the food served at his establishments, but in the people who made every guest experience memorable.
To guests, George represented true hospitality. He understood that dining was about more than a meal—it was about connection, celebration, and shared moments. His restaurants became gathering places for families, friends, and business associates, all welcomed with the same warmth and attention to detail that defined his approach to service.
Above all, George was a family man. His greatest joy was his family, whom he loved deeply and supported wholeheartedly. His legacy lives on not only in the thriving business he founded, but in the values he instilled in those closest to him—hard work, integrity, generosity, and pride in one’s craft.
In keeping with George’s wishes, the family encourages all who knew him not to dwell in sorrow, but to celebrate a life well lived. He would want to be remembered for his achievements, his resilience, and the joy he found in bringing people together.
In lieu of flowers, those who wish to honor George’s legacy are invited to consider making a one-time or recurring donation to the George A. Kalkounos – Chicago Prime Steakhouse Endowed Scholarship at Harper College. This scholarship was established to support and inspire future culinary and hospitality professionals, providing students with the opportunity to pursue success in the industry George cherished so deeply. Through this endowment, his passion for mentorship and education will continue to shape generations to come.
The Kalkounos family expresses their heartfelt gratitude for the overwhelming outpouring of love, prayers, and friendship extended during this time of loss. The support from friends, colleagues, and the community has been a source of comfort and strength.
